About Job Titles

How do you convince an employer that you deserve being recognized for your work even if you haven’t had the job title yet that shows how far you’ve actually come?

Well, let’s look at this more closely. They may assume that you don’t have the experience because you’ve never had a certain job title. Your mission is to encourage them to see that you, although you may not have had the title, have performed the actual function and have the experience they need.

In your interview, focus on demonstrating that you have the experiences that they care about. If you’re a leader, if it’s undeniable that you’re a leader, and you just haven’t had the official title to put on your resume, but you have the experience, give examples from your experience, from your education, or from organizations you’ve worked with where you’ve run something of significance, then emphasize that: “Hey I might not have the title on my resume, but I have the experience to lead people.”

Look at someone like Lawrence of Arabia; he went right up the ranks because he was a natural-born leader. Tell them about how you’ve excelled in leadership roles or thrived in them. For example, you might not have worked in a corporate setting as a leader, but you might have in the armed forces. You might have had responsibilities where you led a platoon or a battalion.

Perhaps in an activist group, you were the person that others followed, not because you were the loudest individual, but because you inspired the organization. Often, that’s really what they’re looking for. Can you motivate others? Can you demonstrate those qualities of leadership that they want to see in an individual?

So it’s not necessarily that they have to see it on the resume, encapsulated in a title. They want to see results. They want to see life experience.
