No BS Career Advice: March 23 2025

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

What I write is not political. They are observations and opinions.

Last year, there was uncertainty in the US economy because of the Presidential election. The three candidates (Biden, Harris and Trump) had different visions of the future. Business wanted to wait until after the election to figure out how to plan.

The country decided who it wanted to be President and Trump is different than how he carried himself the first time he was elected. Whether you like it or not, he has a plan and is working on implementing it. If it works, government will be smaller (governments were the primary source of new hiring over the past 4 years). The price of tariffs that level with a number of countries (for example, India has a 100% tariff on US agricultural products. The US charges 5%. France charges between 0 and 22% plus a VAT tax if 20%. The US charges France less).

Equalizing tariffs might cause behavioral changes by US consumers to buy less expensive American products, creating jobs and not sending currency overseas. However, it is a change and one thing I know is that business HATES change.

If you have a little time, download podcast interviews from the All-In podcast with Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. It will give you a clearer idea of the Administration’s thinking. You can watch the two interviews on YouTube or listen wherever you listen to podcasts.
