FROM THE ARCHIVES (2015) Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses career planning for Millenials

Read Full Transcript

Hi, I'm Jeff Altman, the big game hunter. And if you're a millennial, I want to have a conversation with you. Business sucks but eventually, what starts to happen is, you have a need for money, you've got to pay bills. And what I want you to consider thinking about, and this is all I'm asking you to do now is think about, are there skills that you need in order to start a business that will help pay the bills for you for the rest of your life?

Now, I'm not talking about becoming Donald Trump, although if that's your goal, that's great. What do you need to learn? How will you get that knowledge in order to do that business, because if you're going to keep working for people for the rest of your life, you're right, you're going to wind up being prey like your parents were to the vagaries of the employment market, and firms that will hire and fire you at a whim.

You have the ability to do something meaningful in the business that you create that provides a service, or an idea that is helpful to people.

So, again, I'm not saying do it today, but think, what do I need to know in order to do what I want to do for the next few years of my life? Who can I learn that from? Where can I get that knowledge? And it's not necessarily going to be from a course although that may be a starting place. Think in terms of mentorship from people; think in terms of coaching from people; think in terms of where you can get that knowledge that's going to help you step out on your own. There are scores of businesses, that you can think of, and if you're not trying to get wealthy, that's okay. But, think in terms of how you can get out from under so that you can do what you really want to be doing.
