The Two Minute Resume and Interviewing Guide
Today I’m gonna be talking with you about managing job search stress. Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me. Yes, that’s right. They hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make a search so much easier for people.
I understand the frustrations of an extended job search. But with the right mindset and strategies, you can stay motivated and energized. And I’m going to give you some advice for managing that stress and feeling good about your search.
So first of all, I think it’s important to adjust your expectations and adjust your timeline. Job searches these days can take four to six months, and have you send out dozens or hundreds of applications and go on lots of interviews before you’re hired. And thus, once you understand this, it’s really going to help you manage your expectations and not feel as discouraged as quickly. Take a deep breath and set milestones to stay on track instead of letting your frustration overwhelm you.
Next, build in daily rewards and self-care. Take time for exercise, connect with friends, read, and do other stuff that you enjoy. Celebrate your successes like I’ve revised my resume or I reached out to someone in my network. You know, you’ve got to recharge. You can’t go 100 miles an hour, and hit your head against the wall all the time because it just hurts. When you start to feel anxious or hopeless, use of positive self-talk. Say things like “I’m qualified and persistent” or “my hard work is going to pay off.” Speaking positively is going to shift your mindset.
Stupid Resume Mistakes: No Months
Take breaks from job search activities. Don’t just check your email or LinkedIn obsessively. Designate specific blocks of time for sending applications or networking so you don’t get burned out. Share your frustrations with a friend or mentor. Hire a coach to help you. They can all help talk you through your concerns and provide an outside perspective. Having support is very important.
Lastly, focus on areas you can control. Get your generic resume perfected. Tailor it for each job you apply for. Prep for interviews. Network consistently. Don’t fixate on things outside your control, like “When are they going to get back to me,” or “What’s their timeline?” The key here is balancing persistence and diligence with self-care and adjusting your expectations because with the right mindset and tools, you can stay motivated in your search. So stick with it and your next role is going to show up sooner than you fear.
