Imagine for a second you’re trying to hire someone, and you’re trying to figure out who you should should choose. How do you go about doing it? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS career in coaching advice globally. That can relate to job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading better, dealing with workplace issues, a whole host of different things.

Now, I had a little fun with this, I went to ChatGPT to see what it says. And it gave a very practical answer. Relevant experience, a strong work ethic, positive attitude, good communication skills, demonstrated problem solving skills, ability to work independently, a willingness to learn, ability to work in a team, attention to detail, alignment with company values. God, that’s awful. Because that’s only a like a small microcosm of what goes into a decision.

Now, most of you understand that hiring is kind of like dating. And the way it’s like dating is you have certain ideas of who you’re attracted to. But ultimately, it’s someone who catches your eye, someone who interests you. And that’s completely emotional. I know when I met my wife, we were in grad school. She changed classes walked into the her new class where I was seated in the front row and I felt electricity. Now that was my story with her. And it took us a while before we started to go out and really go out. I won’t go into the details of it. But clearly, I felt something in that initial moment. And that’s the missing ingredient for so many of you. You don’t really . . .

you’ve heard the phrase. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. What are you like at your best? How do you demonstrate that you’ve got a certain magnetism about you. Now on TV, they show it in particular ways. For example, whether it’s on the show Mad Men, or on the show Suits, or on other shows, where there’s a character who’s got that magnetic quality when they walk into the room, it’s almost like they glide in and the seas part for them. And everyone’s gives them their power.

You’ve been in situations where that’s happened for you. But on interviews, because it’s important, it’s your job, it’s a career, you paralyze those qualities instead of really using them.

So I want to remind you, if you’ve got it, flaunt it. Use it. If they don’t like it, they’re not for you. Kind of like in dating, right? Be you at your best. Be excellent. Attract people to you. And that’s throughout the entire job search, by the way. And we’re going to go into that in other videos. But for today, think of it from the standpoint of how do you make yourself desirable for someone? What’s the magnetism that you have that attracts people to you, and let them see it? Risk failure to not wind up being like all those other people that they talk to? We’re also qualified, but that no one really has it. I want you to demonstrate it to them.
