The First Rule of Salary Negotiation

NegotiatingHi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People started to call me The Big Game Hunter when I did recruiting, I hunted down leaders and staff for organizations and did it for a long time successfully. Now, people hire me for no BS career advice and coaching globally, because I make things so much easier related to job search, hiring more effectively managing and leading better, workplace issues, and much more.

Now, imagine for a second, you’re at the point in your interview process where you’re getting an offer. And you’re starting to look at the benefits that are available to you and they’re not quite right. What do you do? What can you negotiate? What other options are available to you. Also, sometimes, the offer isn’t quite good enough, and you want to increase the money in some way. So in this video, I’m going to open up a couple of ideas to you of things that you might be able to negotiate. The larger the firm, the less likely they are to negotiate some of the benefits because they have rigid rules in place that deal with the insurance coverages and 401 Ks and such. However, try. Especially with smaller to midsize firms, you can often get more out of them than you think.

So here are some of the things that you can normally negotiate– additional vacation time particularly, if you’re about to start a position and you have a vacation booked or a trip booked. Sometimes you can get them to pay for that vacation time. And don’t just simply say “I’ll take it without pay.” Try and get it with pay. Or if you’re used to six weeks vacation and this firm starts you off with two, sometimes you can negotiate additional vacation time, and additional compensation for the vacation time that you’re giving up.

A signing bonus. Now a signing bonus, and here’s another one, relocation assistance, normally have strings attached to them. And the string is you have to stay with them for a particular period of time or else you’ll have to reimburse them. Just be aware of what the deal is, before signing on to it. Okay.

Another thing is a flexible work schedule. How many days you might work from home.  Health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, the 401k, restricted stock units, particularly for those of you who are joining firms at a level where restricted stock units (RSUs) are available. Sometimes you can get more of them from them.

Tuition reimbursement, professional development opportunities, on site childcare, gym memberships, a company car.

Being prepared to negotiate for these additional benefits can increase the overall value of your offer and make it much more attractive for you and make you want to accept the offer from a firm.
