What is the typical timeline for a company to hire a replacement after receiving two weeks notice? Is this considered a normal or reasonable amount of time? You know, for certain types of jobs they can find someone within a few days, and that would be normal. For other types of jobs involving particular skills or expertise, it can take significantly longer than a few days; it can take a few months. Is this typical? Yes, yes. It depends on the interviewer and the nature of the questions or the kinds of skills that they need someone to have.
So the long and the short of it is, it can take any amount of time, and it’s not your concern anymore. If they say, “We can’t take two weeks from you, we need at least four.” Well, my new employer is expecting me to be there in two weeks, and I’m going to respect those wishes. “But we need you for four.” You know, and I understand that, and my new employer needs me within two. Just to be very calm about that. And you say, “I can help with the interview process for however long I’m here if you need some sort of assistance with transitioning the new person to joining, happy to help with that off hours during hours I’m working for my new employer.” “Who are you going to work for?” “I don’t think that’s particularly relevant, but I’m going to work for another organization and I’d be willing to answer questions from this person off hours. So if you need that, message me. We’ll set up time for me to talk with this person to assist you.” That’s all you do.
