Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I coach people and organizations, helping them be more effective. That could be around job search, hiring, managing, being more effective in the workplace, a whole host of different things. And the question I was asked was, is it okay to message a recruiter on LinkedIn after I apply for a job?

Now, I want to be clear with my answer. And I'm going to reference my time when I still did search, which I don't do anymore. I now coach, and when I worked in search, a resume would arrive. Two seconds later, I would get the phone call that would say, "Did you get my resume?" Like the technology doesn't work.

If you're blasting hundreds of resumes at a time, well, you're a spammer and you may wind up in the spam file. And if you're doing that, you're not going to get results because you're sending out the same resume over and over again. The broken watch is right twice a day. Your resumes going to work for you much more infrequently than if you tailor it. Assuming you're sending a resume that's customized for the role and not blasting hundreds at a time, a phone call is okay, a messages is okay AND not like what used to happen when I still did search where we sent, you know, I would receive the phone call a minute or two later as though the technology failed.

Give people a day or two. If you haven't heard, "I sent the resume to you. I believed it really fit your role. I just want to make sure it got through your ATS to you. Could you just check because this is what my background is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." And you can do that as an email. You could do that as a phone call. The likelihood is you're better off message. through LinkedIn, because the likelihood of you getting through on a phone call is pretty small.

So the answer is yes, it's okay to contact them . . . but not instantly, not immediately. If you're a younger, newer professional, and your parents are telling you to do it, show them this video, because they're darn wrong.

No, it doesn't show that you're eager. It. shows you're an idiot if you do this. So give them time, have a little bit of patience. Calling, messaging and quickly, you're interrupting their day. They've got other things to focus on other than you. You're not going to get through instantly; they're not going to respond instantly. They're not going to drop everything that they're doing to respond to you. Ty'here just going to make fun of you is the truth.
