I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm called The Big Game Hunter because I hunted down leaders and staff organizations for what seems like 100 years.

The point of this video is really designed for those of you who are you 20s or early 30s, those of you who may be struggling to get into your careers, those of you who may have abandoned LinkedIn because you think it's an old person’ s network.

Frankly, it is. It's geared toward people in the midcareer and beyond who want to position themselves for their future. However, those are people who have jobs, those are people hire people, those are people who you need to be in contact with because they've got some power. They've got some authority. They make decisions that can get you into organizations. They can refer you to organizations. They may be involved with hiring.

Now you may think this is a load of crap. But how has what you've been doing so far been working for you? Sometimes, people need to do is to try things that are uncomfortable, try things that others think are useless and make it work for them.

So, my encouragement to you is revisit LinkedIn and really work the system. How do you do that is networking? Networking with absolute strangers. Networking by joining groups and creating a positive impression. Talking with people. Finding ways to use the system to your benefit to create positive impressions so that you can get entry into an organization and ultimately get to a decision-maker who can hire you. That's the game plan with LinkedIn.

Now, you may think the yourself that this is a lot of work. Yes, it is. Again, how is what you been doing so far been working for you? If you our happy working in a menial job that you weren’t trained for, keep doing what you are doing. If you're in your career and you just don't like LinkedIn, well, maybe you'll find something different at some point. Maybe someone will create a product that will be more to your liking, but, for now, it's the best game in town.

Within Facebook, there are products that try to mimic LinkedIn where you get a chance through your Facebook connections to connect with people and network. Frankly, they are small potatoes (If you're familiar with that expression) by comparison to what LinkedIn does for so many millions of people.

My encouragement for you is pay attention to LinkedIn and use LinkedIn. Don't just simply post your profile. Get immersed in the culture of LinkedIn. There will be days that you will find it's a waste of time and nothing will happen. Then, that one situation happens during your job search and then others will present themselves to you in the future that can make all the difference in the world.

    LinkedIn is just as futile as every other job search tool out there.
    I’ve had more people put their ass on the line to get me hired that I know in person than I’ve ever had from people I’ve met online (but never personally met in person). Sadly, the people I know in person aren’t in what we’d call plum career fields (I have many friends in food service, hospitality, and if they’re not in those low wage Hell Holes, they’re in high paying fields that I’m utterly unqualified for like Engineering.) But I could literally make two phone calls and in 30 minutes have a fast food or retail job. I could spend MONTHS on LinkedIn trying to impress some middle aged middle managers with the hopes of landing something, and end up getting nowhere.

    I’ve yet to land a true career – I use LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook – if it’s there, I use it. But I’ve yet to have luck getting even crappy low wage work via the internet, let alone break out of the crappy low wage retail jobs that are 99% of the non-agricultural and non-oil jobs in the Dakotas (where I live). Interpersonal relations have always worked better than those covered by the veil of the internet, where people rarely can get the full picture of a person’s potential.
