I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I've got a fun scenario. Person's out of work. They've had multiple interviews with three companies and are 99% sure one's about to offer them a job tomorrow. But it's ranked lowest among the three. They have final interviews with the other two jobs at the end of the week, and they don't want to turn down this offer because they need a job. How do you handle this?

Such a common scenario. And let me just start by saying, you know, as I'm recording this, it's Wednesday. So let's say you're getting the offer today. And you have finals on Friday. Before you walk in the door at the other two places, let them know, "I have another offer" (once you have it). And how long do you think after the interview it will take for you to make a decision if you if you decide to hire me? Or not hire me? How long would it take to communicate?" Because sometimes you may have a sense that the process is coming to an end. But they're about three quarters of the way through. So you want to know that part of it, and simply say, "thank you and move on from there."

With the firm that you're expecting to get the offer. Once you have the offer, what you do is say, "I'd like to think about it for a day or so. This is an important decision for me. I don't want to make a mistake. I'm thinking favorably about joining but I just want to be safe. Could you allow me to come back to you on Friday afternoon?

Now on Friday afternoon, you circle back to them, because you're probably not going to have a decision from the other two by that time. They're going to probably want to wait until Monday, Tuesday. And you email the firm a couple of questions and simply say, "I'm thinking very favorably about joining. However, I have a few questions." You pose the questions to them in email. And then from there, "if you like we can speak on Monday because I just want to give you a sense of what my concerns were, I just want to see how we could address them."

Maybe the money's a little low. And that's why they're third on the list. Maybe the works a little bit off. And you want to find out about promotional opportunities, something that allows you to ask questions of them, that stalls the process as well, because you don't want to lose it, right?

So, communicate. Don't hide. Let them know that you have a couple of questions. They'll come back to you probably on Monday. Maybe they want to set up a time. That buys you a little bit of time for the other firms. And, again, you're letting them know that you're getting another offer. And they may say to you "So why don't you take that offer?"

"My preference is with your firm. It's a better opportunity. I've been told the range is a little higher." Whatever it is, give them something so that they haven't a sense that you are interested in their opportunity. And this is not about playing one against the other.
