I Used to Use Job Boards

I was a professional recruiter for more than 40 years, surviving one economic slowdown or another through those times.

I confess.

I used job boards to help me find talent for my clients.

I also use:

Networking

LinkedIn research

Email

Facebook

Twitter

Asking (and begging) for referrals

I blogged (and still do), tweet, create videos, put out multiple podcasts, and published two ezines, and much more to find talent.

I used job boards to find talent despite all the data that tells me that job boards fill very few positions (the way the data flows, 10% of positions are filed by job boards, 20% by recruiting firms, and the rest through networking; I think the data is incorrect because I know many recruiters use job boards to find the people they refer. Let’s make it 30% are filled by job boards and 70% by networking). Why do I do this?

Because, like you, I didn’t have the time to review all the resumes that were spammed to me outside of job boards, interviewing, and scheduling interviews and I would like to take the easier way to do things even when it is less successful.. 

But for you who are looking for a job, for you who are out of work trying to find a position, how does being lazy work for you? If you are spending 80% of your job search time on something that has a 30% chance of being effective, you are missing out on A LOT and that can be very expensive.

Job boards were a small part of my strategy and tactics. What about you? What can you be doing differently to get better results? How are you holding yourself back?
