How to Choose Keywords and Phrases to Search for in Resumes?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

In my experience doing recruiting, I used “long tail keyword” searches to try to find people who met the absolute minimum requirements PLUS those who met many of the secondary and tertiary requirements a client defined as being ideal. If no one met that long list of requirements and functionality, I would scale back some and then add them back in and eliminate a few of the others. The idea is to find people who meet as many criteria as are suitable for a hiring manager to want to bring someone on board.

What is a long-tail keyword search? Think of a comet that has a big head (the primary skills) and a long tail of debris (the secondary skills and functionality needed and/or preferred).
