How Do You Convince People You Aren’t Overqualified?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Have you ever had your job applications repeatedly rejected for being “overqualified”? How did you convince them otherwise?
The Top 10 Salary Negotiation Mistakes
Hey, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and someone asked me the question, “how do
you convince people that you aren’t overqualified?” The question was a little
bit longer when originally published have you ever had your job application
repeatedly rejected for being overqualified how do you convince them
otherwise?” Now, I first have to demonstrate . . . define the term
“overqualified.” Overqualified really means to them you have more experience than
they need. On their side, they think they’re going to be bored. The
other part of this, which they’re not going to say is you make too much money
because let’s say you have eight years of experience and they’re looking for a
three year person in theory you could do the job but would you do the jump at the
price that they’re willing to pay now that’s the staff level example one of
the other scenarios is the classic I’m a manager and I need a job and are willing
to take a staff level position.” Well, you haven’t done that kind of work in years
although you’ve managed people who do it. Are you really qualified anymore and are you
willing to take the salary reduction to do that job see what I’m going with this
Overqualified is really a euphemism for you make too much money and in order to
convince them of that and the real example they sent in an application so
there’s a questionnaire about current compensation they know what you’re
making and, thus, when they say, “overqualified,” they’re trying to save time
for everyone they don’t want to interview someone who’s not going to
take their offer and you’re not going to accept their offer you make them willing
to offer too little so how do you convince someone well it’s really to be
at the right level for what they need they want a three your person you’re
a three year person. You’ve done the work that they’re looking for already?
And, great, you like this kind of work and you want to continue doing it. But convincing
them on the basis of money it’s not going to work if you’re more experienced
and you’re going to take a less expense job requiring less experience it’s not
gonna work because they think you’re gonna leave as soon as something better
comes along.
