What we work for someone, there is always someone to hold us accountable for the things we don’t do. As job hunters, it’s important to learn how to do it for yourself or to plant systems that will help you.
I'm Jeff Altman, The Big GameHunter. I'm a career and leadership coach, a former executive recruiter, I help people land in new roles and be successful in them. You know, there's a funny thing that happens in job search. Let me back up one second. When I worked in recruiting, in effect, one of the things I did was I functioned as a salesperson. My job was to fill jobs and to earn a commission y doing that. As such, I knew management would hold me accountable when I was an bemployee of a firm. When I became self employed, you know, I cut myself a little bit of slack. I was less accountable until I realized one of the things I had to do was be accountable to myself, that there was not going to be any external person holding me to account, that I had to do it for myself. Often with job hunters, they're in a situation like I was in when you're working. There's someone there who's gonna go, "Hey, what's going on? Why haven't you done (fill in the blank). And when you're a job hunter, you cut yourself some slack. If anything, some job hunters lie to others and lie to themselves, about how much effort they're putting in and whether they're keeping the commitments and promises that they've made to themself of things that they need to get done. The first thing they forget to do is write it down. They forget to write down the things that they promise to do to for themselves, and thus lose them in the etherbecause it's not recorded somewhere. So my reminder for you is your responsible for your own accountability. And if you need an external person, you may have a wife, husband, partner, you may need to hire a coach, you may need to figure it out. But you probably can't. So get someone to support you with self accountability. So that in this way, there is that external force reminding you before you get to the external force-- having an empty bank account to remind you. I'm Jeff Altman. Hope you found this helpful.
