Hi, I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach. I'm a former executive recruiter, and the head coach for You know, one of the things I like to do is open up about what goes on in recruiting and talk with you about what goes on behind the scenes in recruiting. Because, after all, you're kind of in the dark. You think you know, but you don't really. So, I want to just simply tell you, everyone, everyone is lying during your job search.

After all, you're exaggerating, right? You're not as good as you think you are in some of these areas, but you want to create a good impression so you oversell your capabilities. And the employer is exaggerating, about how good this opportunity is, After all, in all my years working In search, I never heard of an employer say to a job hunter, "you know, we've got a lot of problems around here. My predecessor got fired, and her predecessor got fired. It doesn't take a genius to figure out my butt's on the line; I need to hire someone to save it."

Instead, everyone puts these little happy smile button faces on. They talk about this great opportunity with a terrific team of people. Did I mention we're like family around here?" Yeah, the family in the Christmas movies and the Thanksgiving movies that's always throwing stuff at one another. That's the kind of family you are.

So, so far, I've said, you're exaggerating, and so are they. And now here comes the other part. So do recruiters. Now sometimes, it's because, I have to say this, the good recruiters are the messengers for each of your lies. They tell you stuff that their client just wants you to know. And they parrot back and they do the same thing for you and it may not be completely true. And, then, there the incompetent recruiters who are just outright liars.

So just remember, when you hear stuff, you need to get independent corroboration. Don't just buy the bull. Always maintain a degree of skepticism before you just accept anything. Test it out. So I'm Jeff Altman. Follow me on LinkedIn at Mention that you saw this video. I'd like knowing I'm helping some folks. Once we're connected, message that you might be interested in coaching.
