If you think your employer is interested in managing your career for you in the way that you would like, you are mistaken. You need to.

You know, I've worked in search for many years and now I do career and leadership coaching and I just want to say too many of you who are early or mid career. . . . And even those of you who are late career, you've probably noticed that fewer and fewer employers are training people for the roles that will follow. By that I mean they hire you for a job today. How do you develop the skills and the experiences for the next role, the "Step Up in Class," the one that you evolve to naturally, the one that really challenges you?
So, Warren Buffett, I think, put it very well when he said "invest in yourself." You need to make investments in yourself regularly to learn the things that you're going to need to and experience the things that you're going to need to experience in order to step up in class because fewer organizations are training, right?
So, just remember where you are today isn't where you want to be five years from now. How do you bridge the gap? Do you think that your employer is going to give it to you? Probably not. Will they give you a small piece of it? Maybe, but ultimately you need to learn, you need to grow, you need to be in environments that are going to challenge you so that you can change.
When I started off in recruiting back in The Stone Age's, the tech was very different than it is today. I learned that if I pushed myself hard, I got different kinds of experiences and, thus, was able to stay current with the evolutions in the tech that even I ,as a recruiter, needed to understand and be aware of.
For you, read ahead. Notice how things are evolving in your field. Take the classes. Write the checks to take the classes. Tried to get the reimbursement from your organization but know that for you you're going to receive the greatest value from this and if your organization doesn't want to take advantage of it, push to get to an organization that will because if you stay exactly as they position you when that org short, you are going to get bored. You're going to get emotionally wiped out and it's going to be hard for you to feel like it's anything more than a job, with that template of what a job is like, that you're going to grow to loathe.
So, learn. Grow. Evolve. Change.
