If you manage or lead a group and one of the people who report to you move on to another area, how will they remember you?
What lessons will they take from their experience with you?
As they describe you to others, will they use terms like, “tough but fair,” to describe your leadership or will they say, “(S/he was a real SOB.”
Usually, the difference between the former and the latter is that in the, “tough but fair” description they felt your heart and your care for them and understood, eventually, why you did what you did AND they got results from it.
For you as a leader, that difference can impact your future opportunities and your future success within your organization.
After all, who wants to work with a “real SOB?” In some organizations, that is valued up to certain levels and then pushed aside. In some organizations, those people get pushed out.
It only takes a few additional minutes for people to get you.
It can be as simple as a smile or asking them what’s wrong.
I know in my past I work for a firm where the senior manager and some of the senior staff showed up at my parent’s funerals (they died two weeks apart from one another). The term me from a critic to a fan. It showed me that I was more than just how much I sold that month to them.
Often, it is in the moments where no one notices that the greatest impact can occur. Those moments are noticed more than you can imagine.
