be a toddler

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

We adopted our son just before his first birthday. He was starting to toddle. At times, he would hold on to my hands and start to walk. When he let go, he wasn’t quite ready to walk so he sat down and sometimes fell down.

He would pull himself up using the couch to steady himself and move from one end of the couch to the end and back, then reach for me, take my hands and start to toddle again. Repeating the same practice over and over again.

It seems like he failed hundreds of times until he started to walk.

From this experience, he began to develop persistence and determination that serves him today.

Every healthy baby goes through something similar.

As adults, we hate failure preferring instead to try something once or twice before giving up.

Yet the lessons that toddlers teach is important.

They are so determined to start to walk that they tolerate frequent and repeated failure.

Adults don’t do that but should.

We expect and want instant success and when we struggle give up.

We should all remember to act more like toddlers and be prepared to fail.
