A Painful Career Mistake I Made and You May Have, Too

Just because I give No BS Career Advice now doesn’t mean I didn’t make mistakes in the past. Here’s one I made and you may have, too.

“Stupid Salary Negotiation Mistakes: Being Too Grateful”

Hi. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and people hire me for no BS career advice. That doesn’t mean I didn’t make mistakes in my own career and life. I have made quite a few of them.

And one of the ones that I made that was particularly painful that you may be making as well, is that you suck it up to stay at a place too long for fear that youStupid Interview Mistakes | Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter might not make the same or better money at another organization. So you tough it out. I know that was the case with one firm I worked for for a long time, where the owner, I’m not going to go into details, but I should not have been working for this person. And when I changed organizations, I worked in an environment that initially was much better, but eventually developed its own problems.

The sacrifice I made was not believing that I could do better at another place and thus, I rode through different versions of hell at different organizations, because I didn’t think it was possible to go elsewhere and do better even though in the example I just gave, the second place was better than the first one I joined. Eventually, it went south as well, as people start to take me for granted.

My reminder to you is, if you act wisely, there’s no reason to tolerate bad behavior on the part of your manager, or anyone in an organization. Yes, you can go to your HR department and speak to a representative there who will basically go to your manager and go ‘bad girl/bad boy, you must stop doing this.’ And then there’s a different version of hell that you experience. Don’t be afraid to change organizations when things are problematic for you. Don’t make the sacrifice for the alleged safety of your current firm if you’re going to be dealing with someone who’s abusive. There’s no reason to do that for you as there was no reason for me. But our minds play tricks on us. And those tricks can be damaging for our mental health for our families, and for so many others.
