A Conversation with an Adult

One member of my wife’s family has struggled in his career. He is a perpetual student. Lots of courses learning new things. Lots of blame for why his career never took off and he seems to expect me to shoulder the responsibility for why the job market is as tough as it is on him.

At one point, he asked me what is the one thing he could do to stand out from the pack of resumes that are sent in.

My answer:

Submit it for something that fits your background.

No, really, what can I do?

I repeated my answer and looked at my wife’s brother, a small business owner. He said that every time he places an ad, he is inundated with resumes that in no way fit what he is looking for. It is a novelty when he gets a response that fits.

So if you want to stand out from the other resumes, stop flipping the same resume to every job you see, like you are flipping burgers in the kitchen of a fast-food restaurant.
