So often, we are held back by her memories and how we interpret them. That’s true professionally as well as personally. In this video, I point out how that voice is lying to you today even though it might’ve been right in the past.

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach, the head coach for jJobSearchCoachingHQ.com, and NoBSCoachingAdvice.com.
There's a story that's playing between your ears. We used to call it "playing a tape." Now it's streaming between your ears that was put there to make you safe, but really is keeping you small. Maybe the original episode was designed to protect you from a bad event, or was caused by a bad event in your life. Now, we're just keeps playing over and over again. It may not be accurate each and every time. The problem becomes when you want to do something different. It suddenly goes, "Oh, no! No! You can't do that! You're not capable of that!" Thus you stay stuck, frustrated, hurt, unable to move forward.
Like some of these stories are, "I can't afford to do it! It's much too expensive." Or "No one would ever believe that I'm an expert at this! Why would they?" Lots of other messages that basically say, "stay exactly where you are. Don't do anything else." The problem is you're unhappy. You're miserable. Nothing ever changes.
Folks, you've got to confront the message because it may not be right. You've gotta try doing some different things and learning from them because you are going to make mistakes including the mistake of staying exactly where you are and miserable.
Don't fall prey to this voice that habitually keeps you exactly where you are. Understand who gave you that voice? How that message got put there because sometime it's a parent, it's a clergyman, it's a friend who tells you you're not capable. Theyhat's their story and you believe them because you like them a lot and care about them enough. They're your parents or your friend or your aunt, uncle, whomever it is. And when you're little, you believe all this stuff, and you stay exactly where you are.
Folks, you've got to breakthrough. Sometimes, just simply saying, "Where did I get this from? How did I get this," is the launch point. But you've gotta break through because, otherwise, you stay in careers you're not happy with, in relationships you're not happy with because you think that's all you can get. It's all you deserve.
In this Career Angle, I'll just simply say you don't wind up doing the work that you want to. You settle. And why would you want to do that? It's lying to you. Get used to that thought. It was there for a reason and that reason may not be valid anymore. It's lying and now it's time to put it away.
