EP 1524 A better offer came through within the 1st month.  I would like to accept this offer and not burn bridges when I get my notice.

I received a question for someone that I thought was a good one. It doesn't happen all that often but when it happens, it becomes a critical issue for someone. The question is, "How do I leave a job within the first month without burning bridges." And the rest of the information is, "Another company finally offered an opportunity with better prospects in salary." So, they want to quit.
Now, let me pose a hypothetical. If you married someone, and they came to you, within a few weeks of your wedding vows, and said, "You know, my real first choice, came back to me and accepted my marriage proposal or proposed to me. You know, I want to get married to them and leave you," would you be happy? Of course, not. And that's the way employers view it as well.
You will be burning bridges. Period. There's just no two ways about it. Look at the metaphor of burning bridges. The idea was that soldiers cross the bridge. Then the generals had the bridges burned behind them so there was no turning back, there was no going back in retreat. You had to go forward?
Well, from you their vantage point, that's what you've done to them. You burned the bridge. They are angry. They've made plans based upon you being there. They had an expectation of you doing the work and you're basically saying, "I was never really all that much in love with you. Someone else offered me better prospects . . . like they're a billionaire and I'm going to be going and getting married to them. So, thanks so much, but I'm going to be leaving."
Do you think they're supposed to be happy? Do you you think that's supposed to be big about it and go, "Oh, I understand." Imagine if an employer did that to you. You're on board for three weeks and they come to you and say, "You know, Jeff, you were a second choice and our first choice just came back to us and said they would accept our offer. So goodbye."
You'd be really happy, wouldn't you? Why do you expect any different from them? So there's no way out of it. Just accept the fact that you're going to burn the bridge behind you and that's that.
