I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm the head coach for JobSearchCoachingHQ. com, a site with curated information that you can watch, listen to or read, that will help you find work more quickly. Now, I thought I would do a quick piece here, where I talk about the kind of self sabotage that people do the proves so costly.
I just want to simply say that I'm conceding that, at times, you don't have the skills or experience to do the job that you're trying to step into. Let's just concede that point; that sometimes that's what occurs. But whether you're job hunting, or in your current organization making a play for another role, often, it's not the primary issue, or the primary requirement that's at fault. Hits little things, its secondary stuff that causes them to say, "no."
So, for example, if you lack confidence, well, you're not going to inspire people that you have a solution to a need and that shows up in interviews. It also shows up in how you conduct yourself in meetings and social interactions, things along those lines, that will come back to bite you in the derriere.
If you're overweight, or underweight and a firm is concerned about putting you in front of people, well, that's not a primary variable, it's something of a secondary nature. If you're someone whose wardrobe is, shall we say, a little bit dated, that's going to come back and bite you in the butt. If your clothing has an aroma, (or you do), it's going to come back and hurt you. You need to look critically at yourself as a product, and see how the product presents itself and it's received by the audience.
After all, you're no different professionally than a package at the at the markets. You walk into a supermarket, you walk into a Whole Afteroods, it has to be packaged in a certain way for you to notice it. Lord knows , prices tend to be pretty comparable. So why do you choose that one image, which is brand, and how the packaging is your impression of it over time. These are all things that are in your control that you can change.
How good a network you have. Again, you can change this, but it starts off with recognizing that you probably have the skill to do a lot of the roles, but you're not packaged well enough. You've created an image for yourself that's not serving you and working toward changing
