Hi, I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people and organizations, trying to help people be more effective in their job, search, their careers, with hiring people with managing staff. You know, I've started doing these LinkedIn videos. If you're watching on different platforms, I apologize that you're getting the black lines along the side. But this is what LinkedIn requires when you record from your phone and I apologize.

This video is one where I just want to hit you right between the eyes and say, most of you work for a living to make money. You make money to take care of your responsibilities, your family, have the life that you say you want. Now, here's where I have to hit you. It's in the idea that if something goes wrong, how prepared are you for that? For example, at some point, there's going to be another recession. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as the one that we had in 2008/2009. But a recession is never a fun time.
Recessions are times when organizations do what they politely call "right sizing," which is firing people. You know, they have to stay alive in order to be there for their shareholders, and to sell product and to make a living, and most people get laid off. Now you may think to yourself, "my boss loves me. He thinks/ she thinks I'm a wonderful employee." Your boss is 32 levels down the food chain from the real decision makers who don't really care. All they care about is that they hit their numbers.
So, I want to take a minute to remind you, that you are the person responsible for yourself and your career. And that this is the time, when times are better, to reach out to your network, develop relationships, make sure you're up to speed on whatever it is that you do, that you're at the vanguard of skills, rather than in the middle or back of the pack. Heven if you're in the vanguard, you can always drop back to the middle but if you're in the middle, people will tend to push you out the door. If you're in the back of the pack, whoo, boy!
So don't trust your management to look out for you. You're the one who's responsible. And that's what adults do, right? You look out for your kids, but ultimately, your kids are going to move out and they're gonna have to make decisions for themselves, right? I just have been going through that with our son over the course of the last six, eight months, where he's moved out, and I'm trying to help him but it's his choices. Well, folks, this is the time where you have to make your choices to look ahead and plan for your future otherwise, the future is going to hit you a lot harder than I think you wanted to hit you.
