Incontrovertible Proof | Career Angles

I worked with someone who started a side business and stole data from our firm in order to populate his systems. When a few of my colleagues noticed the breach, they went to management and all of us met. We made it clear that when we sent a resume to this person to fill a job, we did not want the resume appearing on his job board where we might lose the candidate to a competitor and not earn a fee. We were not providing the resume in order to have our property stolen. If there was a fee to be earned, we expected to earn it.

Management decided with us and told him in front of us that we were right and to cease doing it again. This a few weeks later when I made up a resume, email address and phone number, sent it to my colleague and found it on a job board when it had only been sent to him, it was impossible for him to deny that he had stolen from us.

There are people who are unwilling to change AND there are people in management who are unwilling to confront the people who are unwilling to change. They often will use the approach of saying, “We made it clear that what they did was unacceptable and that there would be ‘severe consequences’ if they did it again.”

The best liars will look you in the eye and lie to your face. You just have to provide incontrovertible proof that what management has told you has been (1) disregarded, (2) is a lie or (3) needs to be acted on.

Losing trust is irreparable.
