Is It OK to Ask about Advancement Opportunities During an Interview? |

It seems hard to imagine that someone is unsure about whether to ask a question like this during an interview yet the rules have changed and you may not know.

A question that one of my coaching clients asked is, "is it okay to ask about advancement opportunities during an interview?"
And, there's a section at the end of the interview where they'll ask if you have any questions. Now, this shouldn't be the first one out of your mouth. This should be a little bit later on.
I'd like you to first start off asking about the role and the way . . . if you know, my philosophy, you ask about the job before the real interview starts and, thus, at the back end, you ask clarifying questions.
Ask about what success looks like, and then this fits in well, right behind that. The way you frame the question is pretty simple. You say, "I'm sure you understand that I don't want to do this job for the next 30 years of my life. What does advancement opportunities look like for someone like me here? Obviously, I have to perform. This is a given. But assuming I'm a high performer, what's next for me? What happens after that?"
And you leave it there because anything beyond two promotions is them giving you a load of crap because they have no idea. Your future boss hasn't gotten to that level yet. What do they know? So I just simply said, if you're a staff level individual and you're trying to get a sense of career advancement opportunities, ask at the end. Ask about how you ascend to the next level and the one after that and leave it there.
