But I Don’t Have Time to Look for a Job!!! But you have to.

I am going to be talking with you about 1 of the common laments that people have which is, "I don't have time to look for a job! I am really busy!" Unfortunately, you're going to have to make time.

Stop and think for a minute and you will discover that there is a lot of time that you are wasting that could be spent on your job search. I don't want you doing this from your office computer if you're still employed because organizations can track keystrokes and behaviors to see what sites you been traveling to. Then again, you do have a phone and there are many things that you can do from your phone. Whether it is replying to emails (that you are getting at your personal account, not at your office account), whether it is taking calls from people, you do have time to do this.

Ultimately, you're going to have to go on interviews but I am trying for small wins here. Here's the reality. Networking takes time. You call someone you've known for a long time, you drop them a note and say, "Hey! It's been a long time." It's not the ideal way to do it. But if that's where were starting from I'm working from the lowest common denominator here. You're a busy person, you haven't been maintaining your network and now you have to reach out.

That is going to take email and a phone call. You can do it from your phone. If you're sending an email, right? You can send a bulk mail bcc to a number of people, right? It doesn't take that long, does it?

I would encourage you to take 20 or 30 minutes a day and see where that takes you. If that's not good enough, you're going to have to make more time and certainly when you get to the interview phase, you don't have to make more time. If they are reaching you at an inconvenient moment, respond by saying, "I can't really talk right now. Could we speak at…" And then offer them a specific time. If it needs to be during the evening, offer them an evening time. They will probably say no to that because a lot of firms respond to that by saying, "Look. We don't want our people to work 24 x 7. If you join us, you don't want to be working 24 x 7 hi there, right? We are trying to be respectful of our own people." Thus, we are back to the dilemma of learning where your gaps are during the day where you can make time and nap sound stressed.

Understand that it is you who is going to have to change. It's you who's going to have to figure out how to work this into your schedule. Not doing it is going to exacerbate the problem that already exists. That is that you don't like your current situation AND you want to change it.

Change has to come from you. It is not going to come from the universe adapting to you. You're going to have to make the change.
