10 Steps to Becoming an Effective Leader
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Here are 10 steps to becoming an effective leader:
- Master the skill of influence. Leadership is fundamentally about the ability to influence the thoughts, feelings, emotions, and actions of others. This is not tied to a position, but rather a skill.
- Influence yourself first. Before leading others, one must be able to lead oneself, making decisions and taking actions to achieve one’s own goals, whether it is fitness, health, or any other personal objective.
- Adopt a servant leadership approach. Authentic leaders seek to influence others for a greater good, rather than for their own self-interest.
- Destroy the limitations in your own mind. A leader’s psychology can be the chokehold on the growth of a business or other endeavor. Leaders need to change their mindset and beliefs to overcome what they perceive as limitations.
- Change your state. Leaders need to be able to manage their emotional and mental states to be at their peak, rather than letting frustration, overwhelm, or tiredness dictate their performance. This can be done using the body, for example, by changing posture and movement to change the biochemistry.
- Develop a vision larger than yourself. Effective leadership starts with having a vision or cause that is bigger than oneself. Having passion for a vision will help drive the necessary execution.
- Learn to manage your disappointments. Leaders need to view failures as learning opportunities and keep moving forward, rather than letting disappointment stop their progress.
- Connect with people and understand what influences them. To lead effectively, you need to know a person’s values, beliefs, desires, and fears. Understanding those factors will allow you to influence and inspire them.
- Focus on constant never-ending improvement. Leaders need to continually educate themselves and develop new skills. Training within an organization must be continuous for it to stay innovative and competitive.
- Model successful people. Look at what successful leaders do differently, learn from their experiences, and apply those insights to your own leadership style.
