#1 Reason Why Job Boards Don’t Work

by

Over 40,000 job boards are available at any time.

They don’t work for a job seeker?  No, you are not the target audience. What, huh?

Applying on job boards and company websites doesn’t work, at least for job seekers.  If you are a job seeker, stay away.  The simple truth is the main reason that companies use third party job boards like LinkedIn, the Ladders, etc. and their own website is that it is a cheap form of advertising for the companies’ products and services to its customers who are also you, job seekers. What?

Here are my numbers.  Of my last 300 clients, only 10 (3.3%) got jobs online.  Guess how many were under the age of 25? 8.  So, 2 of my clients over the age of 25 were successful.  2 of 300 or 0.6%. Most of my clients are 35-55.  If that is you, you have better luck getting struck by lightning.

When a company advertises jobs online, they will way over post for ghost jobs (jobs that aren’t real).

Subtly, what goes off in your mind?

  • “Wow, did you see XYZ company has 10 openings in IT and finance?”
  • “They must be doing well, a hot company.”
  • “Wall Street is back baby!”

We are trained to think volume is good.  In sight, in mind.

Compare the cost of posting a job online vs. TV/internet advertising.

Perception is reality. According to Proven.com, LinkedIn charges about $17/day to post a job https://blog.proven.com/how-much-to-post-a-job. CBS charged companies about $5 million for a 30 second spot during the most recent Superbowl https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/30/how-much-it-costs-to-air-a-commercial-during-super-bowl-liii.html.  All right, a bit apples and oranges, but you get the point.

The other clear winner: the multi-billion-dollar job board industry.  Indeed has an estimated $2.6 billion in revenue https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/indeed#section-interest-signals-by-bombora.  According to glassdoor, there are over 40,000 job boards online at any point in time https://www.glassdoor.com/employers/blog/how-much-it-costs-to-post-a-job-online/.  Glassdoor reaches 67 million users each month of all different ages and demographics.  Who is the real winner?

So, you, the job seeker, are the pawn in the chess game of money.

Take back control:

  • Stop spending hours trying to fool the bots by changing each word of your resume
  • Realize that the one-click process is one click for everyone not just you
  • Stop eating the job search candy to satisfy cravings today which only end up on your mid-section or hips tomorrow.
